Fan’s Favorite Ballpark

Filed under: Random Thoughts — donryan @ 2:09 pm

Sports Illustrated has a story on the fan’s favorite ballpark.  The winner, no surprise to me, was the Jake (which has now been lovely renamed Progressive Field, ugh).  Not withstanding the hideous new name, it is a great place to see a ballgame.  It’s a georgeous facility, reasonably priced, good sight lines, and the Tribe produces an awesome product.  What’s not to love.

For you Yankee and Red Sox lovers, second place is first loser.

Gabri’s Show and Tell

Gabri’s class with Grandpa’s truck

Originally uploaded by ryaninmtv

When I was a kid, my dad brought his semi-truck to my kindergarten class for my show and tell (side note, this was 30+ years ago. I am old). Needless to say, for some time thereafter, I was the man. He also did this for my sister when she was in kindergarten (not sure about my brother, he’s older).

When our kids went to preschool, Dad took his truck in for Becky and Michael (ten years apart). Now our baby is in preschool and the circle is complete. Dad/Grandpa took his truck in for Gabri’s class this week. I have the pictures in our Flickr page (badge at the left). Her whole class wants to be truck drivers now. I’m pretty sure that’s not what Dad was going for.

After all these years, it’s still pretty cool.

Be a good leader- Work with people better than you

Rick Segal has a spot-on post about surrounding yourself with folks who are better than you. The absolute worst thing a leader can be (more than even indecisive) is insecure. Leaders who are not secure in themselves either sabotage the work of those around them (to save the glory for them) or do everything with no assistance (leading to burn-out and increased cardiology bills).

You can’t be good at everything. Surround yourself with folks who are.

Meetings? Not so much.

I poached this little gem from Seth Godin. It is beautiful. When I worked in the big corporate world, I had a sign in my office that said:

Rome did not conquer the world by having meetings.

The did it by burning and pillaging all who opposed them.

I wasn’t one for subtlety in those days…

Quick Updates

I have been running around like the proverbial chicken sans head the last couple of days.  It will only get worse I fear.  Our firm has been extraordinarily busy.  Better than my expectations.  We have a contract with a major insurance/financial planning firm which has really boosted our workload (and bottom line).  It’s a little crazy but it’s a good crazy.

Last night I spoke at church on getting back to basics.  It was not a deep message and was likely geared more to me than anyone else.  I had several folks come up afterward and tell me it was just what they needed.  God is funny that way.

This afternoon, I am heading up to Barberton for our District Conference.  I am not up for election this year so it will be nice to enjoy the conference.  Our excellent Sunday School Secretary is up for re-election and I will go spread the good word about him so that we can continue to work together.  I feel very fortunate to work with someone I have incredible respect for and who is an all around good guy.

As a bonus note, my good friend Robbie Knox is coming in from Saint Louis to promote Save Our Children.  After the conference on Saturday, we are taking in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton which is about 20 minutes from Barberton.  I am also taking a fair amount of work with me to conference to propel me through the down time.

Someday, I really must schedule a vacation.
