Try This Experiment
Interesting story this morning from the Idaho Statesman (no, not a regular read for me). Mark Solon, who is a venture capitalist in Boise, Idaho, is going sans email from Memorial Day to Labor Day, all 14 weeks. He has put an auto-reply with his phone number and requests that folks call him instead. His premise is that the vast majority of email he receives in frivilous and the important stuff can be handled via a call. It’s an experiment in efficiency.
I don’t think I could do it. In fact, I’m certain I couldn’t do it. I am admittedly hooked on email, both via my computer and my Blackberry. Speaking of the joys of Blackberry, my brother in law, who is a QA manager, called me this morning and said he received a Blackberry from his company. He was sitting at the bus stop with his son sending and receiving emails, checking the web and such. Yes, another addict.
Could you turn off email for 14 weeks? I’m saying I would have a hard time with 14 hours.
