The Start of the Second Half

Filed under: Random Thoughts — donryan @ 6:20 am

Today, being July 1, marks the beginning of the second half of the year.  As I age, I am taken by how quickly time passes now.  I remember when the period from New Year’s to Memorial Day took forever.  It doesn’t seem that way any more.  Everything we planned on getting done this year- we are now half way through that time frame.  It does inspire some urgency.

As I’ve mentioned countless times, I am turning 40 in a couple months.  Not that that is half time (based on life expectancy tables, I passed that a couple years ago), but something about 40 strikes me as meaning you are really a grown up now.  Statistics tell us that a persons earning power is greatest between 40 and 60.  By 40, most folks have either settled on a career or are firmly ensconsed in one.  By 40, you should have your act together.

One of the things I’m working on this year (and really, within the next few months) is defining the areas in my life where I really need to focus and really need to move on.  Everyone I know is so busy and there is only a finite amount of time to work on everything that I want to accomplish.  I’ll have more about that a little later but this is what I’m thinking about as I start the second half.

In Cleveland

Filed under: Travel, Work Life — donryan @ 6:10 am

I am traveling today in Cleveland, meeting with several long term acute care hospitals (LTACs).  One of my (many) jobs here is to work with discharge planners to find facilities to accept our clients or assist them in transitioning to home once they are medically stable.  I enjoy meeting with other case managers and, as often happens when I visit hospitals, am glad that I no longer work in one. LTACs are an essential bridge between hospitals and nursing homes/home care.  I am amazed at the level of acuity of the folks they accept; people that would easily have been ICU/step down patients when I first started practicing nursing (although that was 20 years ago).

Anyway, on the north coast today.  I have a post about the parliamentary election system (?!?) and why I’m in favor of it ruminating in my head.  Maybe I’ll write that up tonight or tomorrow.
